The Vineyard varsity icemen clinched a berth in the MIAA state Division 2 tournament in a most satisfying way Friday afternoon at the CDL Arena in Raynham. They beat their archrival Coyle Cassidy to do it.

Tyson Araujo scored two goals to go with three assists, while Brian Fraser set up three goals and netted one in a 6-3 win. Andrew Carroll, Alexander Vukota, and Andrew Wiley also tallied. The Vineyarders broke open a 3-3 tie with three unanswered goals to pay back the Warriors for a 4-1 loss January 29 at the MV Arena, the only Eastern Athletic Conference (EAC) setback for M.V. this season.

The Vineyarders (10-3-1 overall) took over the conference lead with a 5-1 record, a half-game up on the 5-2 Warriors. Martha’s Vineyard controls its own destiny in the league. M.V. skated against Somerset Berkley Wednesday and plays Bishop Feehan February 19 at Aleixo Arena in Taunton.

Whalers keel-hauled

The Purple followed up the big win against Coyle Cassidy with an 11-3 non-league romp over host Nantucket on Saturday. Brian Fraser chalked up a four-goal “Texas” hat trick with one assist. Andrew Wiley scored the three-goal trick and added an assist. Tyson Araujo had one goal and set up five more. Nick Vukota scored his first varsity goal, while Emerson Mahoney and Austin Morley each added a goal. Cahal Robinson got the win between the pipes in his first varsity start.
