Vineyarders senior DeShawn James goes in for the score against Somerset Berkley.

The MVRHS boys basketball team topped Bishop Fenwick, 64-55, yesterday, Feb. 19, at the Dedham Winter Classic tournament in Dedham.

The boys won an overtime thriller Friday afternoon, defeating Somerset Berkley 85-83 on their home court. The Vineyarders claim at least a share of the Eastern Athletic Conference title with the victory, the fifth consecutive year the team has won or shared the league championship title.

The team plays visiting Danvers Saturday afternoon at 5:30 pm, in a rematch of last year’s state championship match up.

In earlier action, on February 4, Somerset needed to beat the Vineyard and Case to make the then upcoming tourney, and they played like it. They had a ton of energy all game long. The Vineyard jumped out to a quick lead and held it between 8-12 points all game. Every time the Purple had a chance to pull away, a missed easy shot allowed Somerset to convert on the other end. In the fourth quarter, Somerset got hot, dropping seven straight baskets to tie the game. In overtime, Navardo Anderson had five points, and Kane Araujo made two clutch free throws. Somerset still had a chance at the buzzer, but their contested three-pointer hit the rim.
