MV Hospital costs double?

To the Editor:

I have noticed several letters by Island residents concerning the high cost for services at our hospital. I can relate one recent experience I had at the hospital that should make you wonder.

I had a routine blood test, requested by my doctor, and the bill was more than $650. Luckily, I had insurance, but my out of pocket expenses were still $275. Had I gone to Falmouth Hospital, the exact same test would have been $289. My final cost, after insurance, would have been about $112. Therefore, if it is not an emergency, I could pay for a ferry trip, buy  new tennis shoes, and take my wife out to lunch to any restaurant in Falmouth, and still save money. I believe in supporting our hospital, but those new tennis shoes look pretty good right now.
