The recreation room at Windemere Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Oak Bluffs became the Memory Café on Friday afternoon. A group of about 40 people, including caregivers, enjoyed the soothing piano music of Island musician Michael Haydn along with coffee, tea and cookies.

The brainchild of Windemere memory care program director Mary Holmes, the free program provides all Islanders with memory loss and their caregivers an opportunity to socialize and enjoy light entertainment and refreshments.

Mr. Haydn, who is adept on guitar as well as piano, performed for an hour. He played popular music, music from movie soundtracks, and several of his original pieces.

The applause between songs was sincere but light due to the fact that many people were sitting in wheelchairs with their hands full, cookies in one hand and a beverage in the other.

The café is open on the third Friday of every month from 3:30 to 4:30 pm.

Mr. Haydn, who often performs at public venues, art gallery openings, private events and parties, will return for the next gathering on March 21, the first full day of spring. He has produced a CD of his music and is currently working on another.
