Welcome home – Peter and Lee Scott have returned from an exciting trip to the Far East. Although their travel covered several areas, the highlight was a visit to Burma. Peter’s great-grandfather, William Maxwell Scott, was a Baptist missionary from 1866 to 1868. The records in Burma show he sailed from Boston in July and arrived in Burma in December.

The library has two good events coming up soon. Both are free — and exceptionally entertaining. On Sunday at 2 pm Leslie Stark will entertain you with a talk on Modern Jazz, Cool Jazz & the West Coast Sound. He knows what he is talking about. I promise you will enjoy this.

On Tuesday at 7 pm Ann Charnley will speak about the Secret Life of Abigail Adams at the library. Ann worked as a researcher working with Cokie Roberts on Founding Mothers. Ann is a good speaker and will share some further research she has done on Abigail Adams. Abigail was a real business woman. Because of her investments during the Revolution, she was able to retire comfortably with her husband, John Adams. I have enjoyed hearing Ann speak on her historical finds. Don’t miss it.

The library will host the Great Decisions Discussion Group in April and May. You must sign up for the class at the library. They have a limited number of books for sale for $15. The group will meet for eight sessions on Thursday evenings at 7 pm, beginning April 3. Each class has a 30-minute documentary film followed by discussion. Topics include defense technology, Israel and the U.S., Turkey’s challenges, Islamic awakening, and energy independence. Then the focus will be food and climate, China’s foreign policy, and the U.S. trade policy.

Don’t forget to pick up your daffodils. On Monday bunches of fresh daffodils will be on sale for $10 at Cronig’s, Edgartown Stop & Shop, and the hospital. Help your neighbors. The M.V. Cancer Support Group provides support to Island residents struggling with cancer.

How come the snowy owls have been seen everywhere except in Tisbury?

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out today to Barbara Howell, Janet Sylvia, and Kevin Voyer. Wish the best on Saturday to Carolyn Henderson, Jib Ellis, and Jay Segel. On Monday, Austin Chandler and Doug Dorchester will probably have green candles to blow out.

Happy birthday to Matthew Barton and his cousin Ben Bartolini from Eastham on Tuesday. Many happy returns go out on Wednesday to Lois Kavanagh, Susan Mone, and Susan Weyl.
