The MVRHS winter sports teams enjoyed one of their finest seasons in 2013-14. For the third consecutive year, four teams qualified for post-season play: Girls and boys hockey, along with girls and boys hoops.

The girls hockey team, with John Fiorito in his fourth year as head coach, continued to improve, winning the Southeastern Mass. Girls Hockey League crown for the first time.

The Vineyard icemen were Eastern Athletic Conference co-champs for the first time, sharing the honors with perennial power Coyle Cassidy. The team also scored a rousing success by raising more than $6,000 for the Wounded Warriors Project. The Vineyarders sported commemorative camouflage jerseys for the annual Fairleigh Dickinson tourney, played February 15-16. The girls also donned the camo gear on President’s Day.

In boys hoops, Mike Joyce’s Vineyarders did not reach the TD Garden this time around but chalked up a fifth straight EAC title (shared this season with Bishop Feehan) and bounced arch rival Wareham out of the state tournament with a 20-point win in front of a large, enthusiastic throng at the Sancy in Oak Bluffs.

With new coach Julie Schmidt at the helm and six seniors lost to graduation, the young Vineyard varsity girls basketball team won the Stripes tournament for the second consecutive year and made the state tournament.

The MVRHS swim team, completing only its second season as a varsity program, also impressed. Both the girls and boys teams posted improved times and scores under first-year coach Jonathan Chatinover. Renee Goodale qualified for both the regional and state meets, while the Vineyard boys won their first Bay Colony Conference meet.
