Aquinnah: new chairs at the library

0

You know, I really can’t tell you what was going on in Aquinnah this week or over the weekend as I was working at the MV Film Festival the whole time. I did see many people from Aquinnah both volunteering at the festival and watching movies.

Richard Skidmore filled me in on his birthday celebration, which included a visit from his brother, dinner, a film at the festival and ended at 3 am at the Aronies. I am starting a campaign now for Richard to open a nightclub in Aquinnah. I realize that Richard is a talented man with many gifts, but really he should be running a nightclub. Let’s see if we can help make this happen.

I also saw Lisa and Buddy Vanderhoop, Liz and Ken Wentworth, Wendy Swolinzky, and Robin Smith. Alan and Suzanne Boyd came from Wellesley especially for the festival and will be back in May to open their house for the season.

Anja May was also there with her two boys, Fynn and Yossi, and Fynn participated in the documentary making class for kids that was offered on Saturday. The results of the kids’ efforts were shown on Sunday night and it was a treat. The kids were divided into groups during the workshop and then roved around the festival with cameras and mikes interviewing people about the festival, what they liked, how often they have come, and what their favorite movies were etc. The final cut was edited and shown before the last film.

This was the first time the festival had run an extensive kids’ program, and it was wonderful to see the kids so involved in the process of interviewing, filming and recording. It added something special to the festival to have the kids involved in a new and creative way.

This Saturday at the library will be the seed swap kickoff and kids’ seed planting. Come and celebrate spring by planting something.

Next Saturday will be origami day. All craft times are from noon to 3pm.

While you’re at the library, check out the new chairs purchased by the Friends of the Aquinnah Library. They are quite lovely and sturdy.

In other library news, the West Tisbury library will reopen in its newly renovated space on Wednesday at 10 am. Stop by and have a look, I’m sure it will be spectacular.

On Wednesday, state Senator Dan Wolf will be at the MV Chowder House in Oak Bluffs from 5 to 7pm for a meet and greet. Senator Wolf will share what’s happening in the legislature, and people are welcome to ask questions and share comments.

Happy Birthday to Cristina Vasquez, who celebrates on Sunday, and Aretha Brown, who celebrates on Monday. A very happy birthday to June Manning, my counterpart for the Vineyard Gazette. She celebrates next Wednesday, March 26. Many happy returns to all of you.
