The Vineyard eighth grade girls travel basketball team, champions of the Cape Cod Youth Basketball League, entered the Barnstable tournament last weekend, losing in the semi-finals Sunday to South Shore champ Sandwich, 33-23.

The girls started off tight and found themselves down at the half, 24-12. In the second half, playing a tight man-to-man defense, M.V. outscored Sandwich, 11-9, but it wasn’t enough. Devin Hill was the top scorer with nine points. Meghan Sawyer added five.

The Vineyard began the tournament against last year’s runners-up from Coventry, Rhode Island, and won, 33-30. Molly deBettencourt led the scoring with 13 points, Devin Hill added 10, and Lily Piggott put up 6. The girls next faced Sutton, winning 34-23. The Vineyard took advantage of Sutton’s lack of height, getting the ball into Devin Hill, who finished with 18 points. Molly deBettencourt had 10. The Vineyard wrapped up pool play against Millbury. Again, Hill (9 points) and deBettencourt (7) led the way in a 24-15 win. Lily Piggott and Meghan Sawyer were defensive standouts.

Next week, the Vineyard girls play in the Mass. State travel tournament in Foxboro.
