To the Editor:
Thanks to the late Dorothy Bangs for her decades of enthusiasm, organization, and efforts raising money through Daffodil Days, to help ease the pain of a cancer diagnosis. The Martha’s Vineyard Cancer Support Group (MVCSG) continued that mission this year on March 17.
It all started in the 1980s, when the American Cancer Society and Dorothy Bangs linked up for Daffodil Days. Many of Dorothy’s dedicated volunteers joined with the MVCSG this year, to continue the fundraising tradition by selling daffodils. MVCSG was the sole beneficiary this year, because the American Cancer Society discontinued its Daffodil Days fundraiser in 2013. All money raised by the MVCSG stays on Martha’s Vineyard, providing temporary and emergency financial assistance to year-round Island cancer patients and their families.
The MVCSG graciously thanks all the volunteers who gave their time and helped to make this fundraiser a great success. We also want to thank Cronig’s Market in Vineyard Haven, Stop and Shop in Edgartown, and the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital for kindly letting us sell daffodils to the public.
Because Daffodil Days is a registered trademark of the American Cancer Society, next spring, the MVCSG will remind you that “It’s Daffodil Time Again” and celebrate spring’s arrival daffodil style.
