Despite snow days, no school in July

Last week’s snow day for Martha’s Vineyard Public Schools pushes the last day of school to Friday, June 27, superintendent of schools James Weiss told The Times this week.

Although a snow day is often a welcome respite for both students and teachers, it can also amount to “play now and pay later,” if the days have to be made up at the end of the school year.

However, despite a harsher winter than usual on Martha’s Vineyard, and several significant storms, Mr. Weiss said schools have used only three of five snow days built into the calendar. Instead of additional full day closings, schools closed early two days and opened late two days due to bad weather, he said.
