In a letter [Reduce their ‘unwelcome presence,’ April 3], the writer argues that the mother should forgo food stamps just as her son refused a free lunch. By this argument, the population of people in poverty would be reduced simply by encouraging them to starve to death.
A similar suggestion was made nearly three centuries ago. Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” suggested that the poor Irish should sell their children to be devoured by the rich. Paul Ryan’s conservative pronouncement mirrors the views of Jonathan Swift.
