The MVRHS track teams got off to a strong start in the first dual meet of the season on April 3 at Nauset in North Eastham. The boys beat the Warriors, 76-59. The girls came up just short, 69-67, but qualified for the state meet in four events.
Olivia Smith qualified in both the high jump with a first place leap of 5’ 1” and in the 400-meter low hurdles (72.3). Mary McCarthy made the grade by topping the 800-meter race with a time of 2:38. The 4 x 400 relay team of Katherine Dorr, Sabrina Reppert, Mary McCarthy, and Julia Neville also qualified for states, clocking in at 4:38.
The girls took first place in four other events. Mariah Campbell won the long jump with a leap of 12’ 11”; Juniper Ezanno was tops in the triple jump (29’); Grace Oslyn threw the shot farthest at 25’ 5.75”; and Olivia Smith was fastest in the 200-meters (28.7).
For the boys, Joe Turney won the javelin and qualified for the state meet with a throw of 156’ 1”. Jeremy Alley-Tarter also made the states with a win in the mile run (4:45). Other winners for the boys included Tony Breth in the triple jump (37’), Nick Fecitt in the 800 meters (2:14), and Serogia Bernier in the 400 (60.7). Kevin Montambault swept both hurdles events, winning the 110 meters in 17.8 and the 400 in 67.0
Coach Joe Schroeder liked what he saw in the season debut. “It was a good effort by both teams,” he said. “We competed hard in every event.”
