Boys tennis team passes tough tests

The MVRHS boys tennis team improved to 6-0 after surviving stern tests from Bishop Feehan and Pope John Paul II of Hyannis.

The Vineyarders met PJPII Monday in Oak Bluffs and edged the Lions, 3-2. The Vineyarders dominated in two of the five matches. Connor Downing defeated Jon Logie, 6-1, 6-0, at second singles, while first doubles pair Zak Danz and Dunovan Belisle beat Blake Detterman and Mike Logie, 6-0, 6-3.

The Lions fought back. Andrew Logie won the third singles match over Max Hammond, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1. In second doubles, PJPII’s Norman Karlson and Sean Pratt downed James Kelliher and David Webster, 6-4, 6-2.

Vineyard senior captain Patrick McCarthy secured the clinching third point, rallying past Cooper Tomchik at first singles, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Friday afternoon, the Vineyarders traveled to Attleboro to meet Bishop Feehan in an Eastern Athletic Conference showdown. Again, the Purple prevailed, 3-2.

Connor Downing got the Vineyarders on the board with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Brendan Scanlon at second doubles. The other four matches were all dogfights. Patrick McCarthy defeated Jack Lahiff at first singles, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3. Zak Danz and Dunovan Belisle topped Feehan’s Hayden Miller and Will Shantey, 7-5, 6-1.

The Shamrocks got their points from John Shanley’s 7-5, 6-2 win over Anders Nelson at third singles and from second doubles tandem Collin Kane and Jeremiah Sullivan, who defeated James Kelliher and David Webster, 6-2, 7-5.

The Vineyarders are back on the home courts April 30 at 3 pm vs. Coyle Cassidy.
