In anticipation of Easter Sunday, The Times asked Bishop Paulo Tenorio, spiritual leader of The Growing Church Ministry, a primarily Brazilian church in Vineyard Haven, to discuss the meaning and importance of Easter and the message he will deliver to his congregants this Sunday. His essay follows. A Portuguese version follows the English version.

I am delighted with the opportunity to share a little bit about the meaning of Easter for members of our congregation. This holiday has great significance to all Christians around the world because it carries the message that Jesus is alive. Christ is our living Lord. He has the power to resurrect us from “death unto life” (John 5:24).

In our church, The Growing Church Ministry, we always prepare different types of celebrations for Easter day. These include plays, special singing, and a sermon meant to show to our people that Our Lord is not dead but he has risen from the dead and because of that we can expect a great and blessed tomorrow. On Sunday, in one of our churches, The Growing Church located in Everett, we will have a night of celebration with many singers, group bands, worshipers from all of Massachusetts and we will gather in one congregation to celebrate that Jesus is alive.

I remember when I was a child, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Easter was a day when our family would gather together to have a special lunch prepared by my grandparents. My parents, my brother, uncles and cousins would all sit together. It was a great time we all had together for besides the fellowship we were also taught the real meaning of Easter. This occasion would be also a time of prayer and we would take a moment to thank God for sending Jesus to save us.

I came to America almost 26 years ago where I met my wife, Mrs. Sandra Tenorio. We have been married for almost 24 years and as our children were born we kept the same tradition alive in order to teach them the real meaning of this important holiday. It is more than just a day to eat delicious chocolate and eggs. We have tried to influence their lives by showing them in the Bible the beginning of the Passover, and God’s command to all generations to celebrate this day (Exodus 12), and the joy that this special holiday represents to all  Christians.

This Sunday at 7 pm, I will deliver a message to the members of our church, located at 44 Pine Tree Rd. Vineyard Haven, titled: “Resurrection is our guarantee  for a better future.” In this message I will show our congregation that Jesus when he rose from the dead He came back to his disciples to make sure they had some assurance and the first of them was that he would be with them — and us — until the end: “I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen” (Mathew 28:20). And yes to me Easter is about Jesus’s  resurrection!

So may the Lord bless all families on Martha’s Vineyard and around the world.’’

By Bishop Paulo Tenorio
