National Safe Boating Week begins Saturday, May 17. In that spirit, the Martha’s Vineyard detachment of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer free safety inspections to boaters around the Island from 9 am to noon, this Saturday, and again on Saturday, May 24.
Auxiliary personnel will examine the vessel’s safety systems and offer advice on anything that should be replaced, improved, or added. Boaters will not be fined or reprimanded for any deficiencies; the program is designed to help boaters identify how they can enjoy recreational boating safely.
This Saturday, safety checks will be given at the Lake Tashmoo boat landing, Owen Park dock and Martha’s Vineyard Marina (formerly Maciel Marine) in Vineyard Haven. On May 24, vessel examiners will cover Oak Bluffs Harbor and Lagoon Pond landing in Vineyard Haven. A safety check usually takes fifteen to thirty minutes, depending on the size of the boat. Boaters who wish to schedule a safety check for their vessel may file a request online at http://cgaux.org/vsc/.
