Former Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School hockey and lacrosse star Riley Dobel finished his lacrosse career at Marywood University with a flourish.

Mr. Dobel (MVRHS, class of 2008), ranked third in the nation in 2014 for Division III scoring efficiency (46.7 per cent), scored five goals to lead Marywood (Scranton, Penn.) to an 11-10 comeback win over Gwynedd Mercy College on April 24. The victory propelled the Pacers (10-8) into the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) championship game, losing to perennial Division 3 powerhouse Cabrini College (16-1).

Marywood also received a bid to the ECAC Division III Mid-Atlantic Region Tournament. As number three seed, the Pacers hosted six-seeded Marymount University on May 6, losing 13-4.

Mr. Dobel tallied the Gwynedd Mercy game-winning goal with 78 seconds remaining to give Marywood its first lead of the game. With his team trailing by two in the fourth quarter, he netted four of the final five goals for the Pacers. He finished with 28 goals in his senior season.

The senior was named the Colonial States Athletic Conference Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Week for the week ending April 27. Mr. Dobel has been named CSAC player of the week three times in his collegiate career at Marywood and was selected as All-CSAC Honorable Mention in an injury-shortened season in 2014.

Mr. Dobel set, then reset Marywood’s single-game scoring record as a junior. He had already twice tied the school record of five goals in a game earlier in his college career before tallying six goals in an April 2013 tilt against Rosemont College. He then scored eight goals against Immaculata University two weeks later to set the new single-game school scoring standard. He also tied the school record for most points in a game (10) as a junior.

At MVRHS, Mr. Dobel captained the boys lacrosse team and was a two-time First Team Maritime League All-Star.

He was selected to numerous regional high school lacrosse and hockey all-star teams, including the Boston Globe all-star team. He was named first team All-Eastern Massachusetts, a Boston Globe All-Star and team captain of the 2008 South Coast Hockey All-Stars. He received the MVRHS History Scholar Award and was a 2008 Presidential Scholar recipient at MVRHS.

The son of Timothy Dobel and Mary Ellen McElroy, Riley is majoring in Environmental Science Administration at Marywood.
