WMVY returns to Martha’s Vineyard airwaves

WMVY/mvyradio returned to the air at 4 pm Wednesday at 88.7 FM.

A Vineyard mainstay for almost 30 years at 92.7 FM, myvradio’s broadcast signal was sold in the fall of 2012 to WBUR. The WMVY staff raised $600,000 in pledges in order to continue programing on the Internet at mvyradio.com, which remains available.

The station is owned by the Friends of mvyradio. The non-profit organization was created to allow mvyradio to become a listener-supported radio station, while maintaining its connection to the Vineyard community, board of directors member Joe Gallagher said in a press release.

“Vineyard listeners who haven’t been able to hear us since we went off the FM dial will be pleased to know that, because of the Save mvyradio campaign, the station will be exactly as they remember it,” program director P.J. Finn said. “We’ve made almost no changes to programming and staff. Now that we are a non-commercial station, we will work harder than ever to serve the Vineyard community.”
