It seems spring is really here. It is apparent from the bright colors of the azaleas to the sweet aroma of lilies of the valley and the appearance of the rare lady slippers. Then there are the lovely trills of our summer birds as well as the appearance of very tiny turkeys being herded across the road by big mamas.

Anna Tomlinson has a new book written by her cat Lucius. This one is called “My Curiosity: A Vineyard Cat Explores.” You will love Anna’s paintings which perfectly complement the text. Lucius has an opinion on visitors and comments on his mother as well. He has good taste, enjoying how an antique chair fits his body so well and expressing a preference for one bed in the sunshine and yet another if it is cool. Check this out and also his other three books. They are available at the Animal Shelter of M.V. in Edgartown and at the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore, with all profits going to the Animal Shelter.

More than 20 local artists are in the annual group art show at the Vineyard Haven Library. The juried artwork is on display during regular library hours from next Monday through June 14. The opening reception is on Tuesday June 3, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm and refreshments will be served.

This year’s artists include Renee Balter, Laura Beebe, John Crelan, Deirdre DeCarion, Joe Doebler, Phyllis Dunn, Lowely Finnerty, Lisa Glus, Marianne Goldberg, Carolyn Henderson, Susan Johnson, and Nancy Kingsley. Also Iris Kirkwood, Clara Kisko, Jennifer Langhammer, Jeri Larson, Peter Mallen, Janet Messineo, Robert Schaefer, Emily Walkenstein, and Ovid Ward. You may have seen work by some of these at the Family Planning Art Show last weekend.

Our town had some remarkable entries on display in support of Family Planning. Janet Messineo and Nancy Kingsley stand out in my mind. Betsey Edge provided two wall quilts and a wall hanging that was laden with unusual buttons, drawing many comments. The art on display was wonderful. We are so fortunate to have such talented neighbors.

Did you know that our library has a permanent collection of artworks that are displayed throughout the year? This includes 12 paintings by Vineyard artist Captain John Ivory.

The Memorial Day picnic was overshadowed by clouds and cool weather. But it could be worse. One of my favorite paintings of Memorial Day shows a crowd in colorful raincoats and umbrellas listening to musicians play on a bandstand draped in red, white, and blue. Perhaps the politicians bring on the showers.

Join the Farm.Field.Sea event on June 14 to benefit Island Grown Schools hosted by The Beach Plum Restaurant and Chef Chris Fischer. You can explore with master purveyors, cook with talented island chefs; and gather to enjoy the creation of one, simple, local-as-it-gets meal. See more at ffsmv.com.

A group of volunteers will be gardening at the Vineyard Haven Post Office on Wednesday mornings from 9 to 11 am. Stop by and lend a hand.
