Oak Bluffs Library to hold artists’ reception and Pinterest demo

Do I dare say “Time Flies?” This Friday is Class Night for the MVRHS class of 2014. It really seems impossible that they were sweet kindergarten students in 2001 and have now completed 13 years of school. This celebration will be held in the Tabernacle in the Campground, which will also host graduation ceremonies on Sunday. Congratulations to students, parents, and teachers. Well done.

Betty Hoyle Daniels will celebrate a milestone birthday on June 14. Family and friends have plans to help her with this celebration. They will hold an open reception at Trinity parish house in the Campground from 2:30 to 4:30. Come by and say Happy Birthday to Betty and meet her family on this very special day.

“You May Call Her Madam Secretary,” a one-hour documentary film by Marjory and Robert Potts about Frances Perkins, one of the most remarkable women of the 20th Century and, says filmmaker Marjory Potts, one of the most forgotten. This film will be shown Sunday, June 8, at the MV Hebrew Center at 7:30 pm followed by a talk with the filmmakers. The Pottses filmed many scenes at the old Lambert’s Cove Inn, with actress Frances Sternhagen re-enacting Perkins’s often witty words from her Oral History. Robert Potts does the voices of FDR, Al Smith, and various politicians in perfect character.

“Sense of Place,” an exhibit of original 35mm and digital photography by Marilyn Miller at the Chilmark Library, celebrates our island from farm to sea and day into night. The opening and reception is June 14, from 3 to 5 pm.  The show continues through July 3, and for more info call  508-645-3360 or visit  chilmarklibrary.org.

Here are some interesting programs being planned at our Oak Bluffs Library: there will be an artist’s reception for Peter Mallen on Tuesday, June 17, at 6 pm, with refreshments. Then on Thursday, June 19, at 1 pm come and learn about the popular web site Pinterest.

Tony Shalhoub and Brooke Adams will star in “I Take Your Hand In Mine,” a play suggested by the love letters of Anton Chekhov and Olga Knipper by Carol Rocamore. There will be one performance only on Monday, June 30, at 7:30 pm at the Performing Arts Center at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, for the benefit of the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse capital campaign.

Friends of the Oak Bluffs Council on Aging is once more sponsoring a Foxwoods Casino Trip. The trip will be on June 17 and departure will be on the 7 am boat and returning on the 7 pm boat. To sign up, call Rose at the Center at 508-693-4509.

We send birthday smiles to Laura Hayden on June 5, Hilda Mitchell and Jennifer Robinson on the 6th, Rory Moreis, the next day, Bob Murphy on June 8, Ernestine Kinnecom and Katharine Colon on the 9th, Suzanne Walker, Lisa Williston, and Donald BenDavid on the 10th, and June 10.

Enjoy your week. Peace.
