Tisbury School staff, parent volunteers, and community members teamed up to make the school’s first Wellness Day, held June 10, an action-packed success. Students enjoyed activities such as hip hop, boxing, jumping rope, yoga, zumba, and gardening. They also attended educational sessions on topics such as nutrition, CPR, U.S. Coast Guard water and boat safety, sun safety, and parking lot safety — all run by volunteers.

“The day was healthy and fun for not only the students, but for the teachers who participated in the classes as well,” Tisbury School nurse Catherine Coogan said in an email to The Times.

All participating students were entered into a raffle for a chance to win one of 50 prizes, including three bikes and numerous bike helmets donated by the Tisbury Police Association, Cycle Works, the Tisbury School PTO, Brickman’s, and The Toy Box.

Many of the students in the upper grades harvested produce from the school garden and helped prepare the school lunch for the day. The Tisbury School cafeteria staff, and Claire Lafave from Island Grown Schools, created a lunch with ingredients that came entirely from local sources, including the school garden, Morning Glory Farm, Mermaid Farm, Thimble Farm, the Farm Institute, Net Result, and John’s Fish Market.

Ms. Coogan said the idea for Wellness Day originated during one of the school Wellness Committee’s first meetings last fall.
