To the Editor:
I would like to acknowledge the wonderful events hosted by American Legion Post 257 in Vineyard Haven with the parade and rededication ceremony to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Veterans Memorial Park. A spectacular evening of listening to the 45-member Navy Band Northeast from Newport, R.I., was incredible. Not to mention the added performance of Edson Rodgers, who did a most gracious job introducing the Navy Band Northeast and playing “My Way,” or as he said, “The Navy Way,” kiddingly. What an uplifting night, full of talent and patriotic songs celebrating our country. Mr. Rodgers not only demonstrated his skill as an accomplished musician, but also played with such grace and even an “on the spot” proficiency as a guest band leader for one of the final numbers. What an amazing night to hear so many talented individuals, under the direction of Lt. Commander Carl J. Gerhard, U.S. Navy. To all of you who were involved, thank you for bringing these two special events to Martha’s Vineyard.
