The Martha’s Vineyard Under-18 boys travel soccer team won the state championship at the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions (MTOC) over the weekend of June 27-29.
Similar to the World Cup, 12 teams from all the leagues in the state populate three brackets with four teams each. The winner from each bracket goes into the playoff round. The fourth best team (from the 3 brackets) is the wild card team and makes up the four-team playoff group. Three games are played in the initial round between the teams within the bracket.
MV beat Grafton, 4-0, on Friday; Tyngsboro, 2-0 (goals: Yannick Gonsalves and Jason Lages) and Brockton, 2-0 (goals: Kane Araujo and Jason Lages) on Saturday; JBO Celtic of Springfield, 3-0, in the semifinals Sunday morning, and Wilmington, 2-0, in the final Sunday afternoon. Ryan Uva and Brandon Dwane scored in the final. Matt Stone is the goalkeeper who had the five clean sheets. Throughout the course of the five games they scored 13 goals and allowed 0.
Over the run of the season, which included eight regular season league games, two league playoff games, five games at the Needham Showcase on Memorial Day Weekend where they qualified for the final and lost, 0-1, plus five games at MTOC, they ended the season 18-1-1. They scored a total of 71 goals and allowed five over the 20 games.
The team is made up of 13 high school rising seniors, one rising junior, three recent high school graduates and one exchange student who recently returned to Spain.
