This weekend marks the 10th annual Della Hardman Day celebration in honor of the artist, human rights activist, educator, and member and supporter of the Martha’s Vineyard community. What began as a day of speakers, award ceremonies, and festivities a decade ago has turned into a weekend-long remembrance.
On Friday, July 25, Featherstone hosts an opening reception featuring art by Ms. Hardman and her former West Virginia State University students. The main event of the weekend is at Ocean Park on Saturday, with guest speakers Henry Louis Gates and author Susan Klein, who was Ms. Hardman’s neighbor for 20 years in Oak Bluffs. Select high school essayists will receive the Della Hardman Day Savor the Moment Contest Prize awards, followed by a cake reception.
The Spirituals Choir and dancer Christina Montoya will perform at the East Chop Lighthouse on July 27 at 6:30 pm. All events are free. For more information, visit DellaHardmanDay2014 on Facebook.
