Bernie Holzer of West Tisbury, a Midwesterner who retired from a long oceangoing career as a merchant seaman to begin a second long career as a purser aboard Steamship Authority vessels, died Sunday in Boston. Bernie was well known to Islanders and visitors as the friendly, cackling voice of the ferry line, reminding travelers not to smoke, to leash their dogs and keep them away from the lunch counter, and to keep track of their children. An obituary will appear in a future edition of The Times. Plans for a memorial service will be announced.
Correction: An earlier version of this death notice incorrectly reported that Mr. Holzer died Monday. He died Sunday.
