Charles E. Layman of Edgartown died on Tuesday, August 5, at Massachusetts General Hospital after a valiant battle with acute myeloid leukemia. He was 74.

A graduate of Boston College High School and Northeastern University, Charlie spent his career working for Sylvania and GTE. He retired to Edgartown in the mid-90s and became the proprietor of the Mailroom @ Edgartown shortly thereafter. He spent his life learning and loved every minute of it. He had a special interest in the sciences. In his illness he was able to contribute to the research being conducted on AML and possible treating medications.

Charlie is survived by his daughter, Tracey Ingle of Stow and her mother, Ann Layman of Davenport, Fla.; his sister, Judith Allen and her husband, Donald, of Falmouth; his brother, Robert Witt and his wife, Luanne, of Douglas; aunts, cousins, and many nieces and nephews of several generations; his Island family, especially Karla Ross and Tami Dinkel; and countless friends and loved ones. He was predeceased by his mother, Edith Allen, and father, Toivo Layman; his sister, Frances Baker; and his brother, Michael Witt.

A private remembrance will be held at a later date.

Donations may be made in Charlie’s honor to the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, 55 Fruit Street, Boston, MA 02114 or online atmassgeneral.org/cancer/giving. Given Charlie’s love of science and participation in MGH’s research, gifts designated for research purposes would be especially meaningful.
