Helen Fontes Cerrone died on July 30 at Bethesda Hospital in Boynton Beach, Florida. She was 91.
Helen was born on September 25, 1922, in Vineyard Haven to Michael Fontes Sr. and Theresa B. Fontes. When she was three years old, she moved with her mother, father, and sister Laura back to the Azores, but she returned to Martha’s Vineyard with her family six years later. She attended school in Tisbury, graduating from high school in 1940. After high school, Helen attended school in Boston to become a beautician, but she worked most of her career as a bookkeeper for Modern Embroidery Company in Boston. She was married to George Cerrone, also of Massachusetts, who predeceased her on May 2, 2003.
Helen and George moved to a retirement community in Boynton Beach, Fla., nearly 30 years ago. She was much loved by her friends at Sunny South Estates, who will miss her very much. She was predeceased by her siblings Michael, Theresa, Seraphina, Mary, and Laura. She had no children, but she is survived by many nieces and nephews, as well as two step-sons.
Helen’s ashes will be interred next to her husband at Oak Grove Cemetery in Vineyard Haven in a small private graveside service to be held at a later date. Donations in her name may be made to The Pine Street Inn, 444 Harrison Avenue, Boston, MA 02118.
