Island Star wins VFA summer soccer league crown, 2-0

The Vineyard Football Association Summer Soccer League concluded its 23rd season on Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Park in Vineyard Haven with a rousing game between teams Sports Haven and Island Star.

Island Star prevailed, 2-0, in the final championship match to take the coveted Gilbert-Hammond Cup.

The first half was a battle for control of the midfield with excellent goal keeping by Sports Haven’s Jackson McBride. Island Star pulled ahead in the second half with a cracker goal by Gustavo Sila. Later in the half, Piotr Kornalski added another score to make the final, 2-0. The VFA thanked Coop DeVille, Island Copper, Creative Stoneworks, and Menemsha FC for making the 2014 VFA SSL a great season. Special thanks went to referee assigner Richard Bennett and field liner Andrew Worlock.
