Ray Sylvia of Oak Bluffs won the 2014 Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club trap championship on the club range overlooking Sengekontacket Pond in Edgartown on Sunday.

Unlike skeet, in which competitors shoot at crossing clay targets (birds) in turn from eight stations, in trap, competitors shoot at targets going away at angles from five stations.

Competitors shot two rounds for a total of 50 targets. Mr. Sylvia and Brian Welch of Oak Bluffs were tied at 40, forcing a sudden death round that gave Mr. Sylvia the victory.

Louise Marx of Chappaquiddick and Haverford, Penn., the 2013 trap champion, finished third by hitting 37 out of 50 targets.

The 22 long rifle rimfire shoot is on from 9 am to 12 noon on Saturday, August 23, and 12 noon to 5 pm on Sunday, August 24.
