Why not an SSA swap system?

To the Editor:

We’ve been coming to Oak Bluffs for a week in each of the last 5 years. We love it here. This year, unfortunately, the only week my whole family could come was August 16 to August 23, which I believe to be the busiest and most expensive week of the year. As such, getting a ferry reservation on our days of arrival and departure were very difficult, even though I tried to reserve in early April. On the waiting list, we were finally able to get a day-of-travel reservation, at 9:30 am. Because we have a five-hour drive we had to leave our home at 4 am. I had called numerous times to try to get a later time but nothing ever became available.

The irony is that one of the Steamship Authority agents told me that there were other people equally eager for an earlier reservation but they were also unable to do so. I asked if I could swap with one of them, but she said that wasn’t possible. Now, wouldn’t it be logical to develop a system that would make everyone happier? Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Steamship Authority.
