The Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby committee is gearing up for the start of the five-week fishing contest on Sunday, Sept. 14. It will mark the 69th year that Island fishermen have gone toe-to-toe, rod-to-rod in search of Derby glory.

The committee could use some help on the fillet table. This position does not require the skills of a sushi chef. Experience is not required, just a willingness to hold a knife and follow some basic instructions, committee member Matt Malowski said.

The fillet station is open 8 to 10, morning and night, through the Derby, which ends Oct. 18. Fillets are distributed to Island seniors around the Island. If you can help fill an open slot, please email Matt Malowski at matt@mvfishing.com or Phil Horton at philip.horton@alcatel-lucent.com.  They will let you know available dates. Weekend shifts are often the busiest, but they will take any help on any day they can get.
