Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs will host the first annual “Iron on the Island” event from 10 am to 9 pm on Saturday, Sept. 20. The day, in celebration of the metal arts, will allow guests to create their own cast iron metalwork by carving their own designs into a plaque for $30 or a bowl for $50. This craft is available from 10 am to 6 pm, and tools will be provided. At 5 pm, the fire will be lit in the furnace, and at 7 pm, the “first tap” will demonstrate flowing iron until 9 pm. A team of metal artists from around the country will be on hand to answer questions about the process. Pickup for finished castings will be from 12 pm to 4 pm on Sunday, Sept. 21. For more information, call 508-693-1850, or visit featherstoneart.org.
