At their weekly Monday meeting, Edgartown selectmen approved a shellfish committee recommendation to open the recreational scallop season on Oct. 1 in all Edgartown waters.
Recreational permit holders are allowed to take one 10-gallon wash basket of scallops per week. Dragging for scallops is prohibited in Cape Pogue until after Oct. 24.
The commercial bay scallop season will begin Oct. 27 in all areas. Commercial scallopers can take three 10-gallon wash baskets per day, Monday through Friday.
“The only thing different from last year is they’re starting a week earlier, hoping to fetch a decent price,” said shellfish constable Paul Bagnall. “It looks like we have a lot more than we did last year, that’s the good news.”
