As if

To the Editor:

Many thanks to Caroline Baum (Sept. 25, “Get out the red pen,”) for calling attention to the appalling street signs!  Since the very first ones appeared, I’ve tried to deal with the dreadful grammar of “Drive like your kids live here” by avoiding the street, rather than succumb to the urge to write in corrections in the dead of night. Then I thought of making my own sign to place next to the offending one, stating “Print signs as if you understood the rules of grammar.”  Now that the signs have proliferated, that project also seems impractical. The answer? Either remove those signs, or have replacements made as if those kids who lived here deserved examples of good grammar.
