The Martha’s Vineyard varsity golf team competed in the first round of the Massachusetts State Golf Tournament, held at Dennis Highland Golf Club on Monday afternoon. Thirteen teams across the state qualified for the MIAA Division III Cape and Islands section tournament, from which the top two teams advance to the state finals.

Martha’s Vineyard placed second with a score of 324, three strokes behind first-place Old Rochester, and will advance to the state finals, where they will face 11 of the top golf teams across the state.

Leading the way for the Vineyard were a trio of sophomores. Finn Simpkins shot a team-best 78, Chris Mayhew shot a 79, and Zak Danz shot an 80. Junior co-captain Kaitlyn Marchand carded an 87.

The team completed their regular season on a four-match win streak, ending with a record of 9-7. The State finals will be held at Black Swan Country Club in Georgetown on Monday, October 27.
