The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School swim team lost its first dual meet of the year on Tuesday against Barnstable. The girls score was 114-32 and the boys was 108-39. The Vineyarders performance was highlighted by first place finishes by Patrick Best (boy’s 50 and 100 freestyle), Renee Goodale (girl’s 50 freestyle), Tucker Cosgrove (boy’s 100 butterfly) and Lia Potter (girl’s 100 freestyle).
The girls set two team records in the 200 medley relay (Lia Potter, Renee Goodale, Galya Walt and Kate Hansen) and the 400 freestyle relay (Renee Goodale, Kate Hansen, Lia Potter and Galya Walt). Both of those relay teams finished second. The team also had many personal best times.
The swim team kicked off the swimming season at the Cape Cod Classic last Sunday on Nantucket. The Vineyard boys and girls teams each placed fifth out of the five teams attending the meet. Nauset won the boy’s championship and host Nantucket won the girl’s championship.
There were some strong individual results. Patrick Best won the boy’s 50-yard freestyle (25.00) and Renee Goodale collected two second place finishes to lead the Vineyard girls.
The Vineyarder’s season resumes Monday, January 5 with a meet at Nauset. Their first home meet is scheduled for Saturday, January 15 against Nantucket.
