The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks, the top overall team in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League, were eliminated from the playoffs on Friday after a grueling 15-inning 7-4 loss against the Worcester Bravehearts at the Shark Tank. After beating Pittsfield 4-1 in the first round, the Sharks needed one more win to reach the championship game.

The Sharks’ best opportunity to win was in the bottom of the 13th inning, with the bases loaded and only one out. Infielder Guy Davidson hit a ground ball, which was thrown to home plate to get the runner and prevent the Sharks from winning. Worcester catcher TJ Riccio then threw the ball to first base in an attempt to get an unconventional double play. Sharks star outfielder Brian Campbell made contact with Riccio’s leg during the throw and was called for interference, meaning Campbell was called out and the inning was over.

Two innings later, Worcester’s Willie Allen hit a one-out RBI double that clinched the win. Martha’s Vineyard was unable to answer, ending their season.
