Norman “Bud” Stickney Jr., 88, of Ashland, died Wednesday, August 12, after a period of declining health. He was the husband of the late Margaret (Jinks) Stickney, who died in 2004. A longtime resident of Ashland, Norman worked as an office technician for AT&T in Framingham, retiring in 1986. He moved to Vineyard Haven in 2010 to be closer to family. Bud was an active participant at the Ashland Senior Center, and was elected Ashland Senior Citizen of the Year in 1998. Here on Martha’s Vineyard, he liked to walk downtown from Havenside Apartments and tell everyone the same stories over and over. Leslie’s for a Herald and Mocha Mott’s for coffee were favorites. He was cheerful and outgoing, despite some awareness that his memory was shutting down; and then, there were poignant silences.

He served his country honorably in the Army during WW II and the Korean conflict.

Mr. Stickney is survived by one son, Norman Stickney III, and his wife Celeste of Edgartown, and their children, Michael Stickney, on Kauai, Hawaii; Sarah Stickney-Robinson, up in the Green Mountain state, Vermont; Meredith Curtis, going to NYC; and Chad Curtis, who found a way to San Jose. He was predeceased by his older sisters,: Flo Leavitt, Adge Huff, and Lavinca Stickney.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, August 19, at 11 am in the chapel of the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main Street, in Ashland, and burial followed in Wildwood Cemetery in Ashland, next to his wife.

A memorial service will be held here on Martha’s Vineyard at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Martha’s Vineyard, Stevens Chapel, 238 Main Street Vineyard Haven, on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 1 pm; refreshments and chatting to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ashland Senior Center, 162 West Union St., Ashland, MA 01721.
