On Tuesday, Oak Bluffs held a swearing-in ceremony for its newest police officer. James Hagerty took the oath of office before a group of family, friends, and colleagues. Officer Hagerty fills a vacancy created by the departure of Officer Dustin Shaw, who left the department last year to accept a job with the Massachusetts State Police.

Officer Hegarty was born and raised on Martha’s Vineyard. A 2001 graduate of Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, he attended Northeastern University in Boston, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 2006 and an M.B.A. in 2012.

He is a captain in the United States Marine Corps Reserves, served two tours in Iraq, and most recently served as company commander of USMC Barracks in Washington, D.C. Officer Hegarty graduated from the Plymouth Police Academy on March 12, and will begin his field training with the department on March 17.

Officer Hegarty lives in Edgartown with his wife Alessandra and his 2-year-old daughter Julianna.
