This fall, from Sept. 18 to Oct. 5, Featherstone will present a Brazilian art show. I am honored that I get to work with Ann Smith from Featherstone on an exhibit that will allow Islanders and visitors to experience Brazilian culture, perhaps in dimensions never explored before. Featherstone presented a similar Brazilian art show ten years ago, and it will be interesting to compare and contrast with this year’s show.

During the spring of 2012, I worked in South Boston, close to the Institute of Contemporary Art. I will never forget the day that I saw the “Giant of Boston,” a gigantic graffiti mural in Boston’s Dewey Square by Brazilian twin brothers Otávio and Gustavo Pandolfo; it was mesmerizing. The duo is responsible for disseminating Brazilian street art all over the world, paving the way for the recognition of other Brazilian graffiti artists. Aside from the mural, the brothers had other pieces on display at the ICA. After that, I saw the exhibit by another Brazilian artist, Adriana Varejão, one of Brazil‘s leading contemporary artists, also at the ICA. It’s uplifting to see Brazilians show their many forms of art all over the world and blaze the trail for other Brazilian dreamers.

I believe that art can spark conversations that bridge differences and bring about change, so, inspired by the Brazilian exhibit at the ICA, I had the idea to have a Brazilian art show on the Island. The Brazilian show could also be a platform for Brazilians to present how the American and Brazilian universes collide and blend on the Island.
