Aquinnah elects Gary Haley to a seat on the board of selectmen

In his first bid for elected office, the electrician won in a landslide.

Aquinnah voters went to the polls Wednesday to elect town officers. In the only contest, voters chose Gary Haley, 128 votes, over Macey Dunbar, 29 votes, to fill a seat on the three-member board of selectmen.

A total of 157 voters, or about 43 percent of the town’s registered voters went to the polls.

Voters also decided three ballot questions.

Voters agreed to a request to pay for the $450,000 bond to purchase a new fire pumper truck, 103-40.

Voters agreed to place a conservation restriction on 2.5 acres of town land off Moshup Trail. Vineyard Conservation Society will hold the conservation restriction as part of the Moshup Sanctuary. The vote was 132-15.A request for $54,043 to fund payroll costs in the assessors, board of health, and public works departments was moot after voters at annual town meeting Tuesday amended the budget on town meeting floor. That measure lost, 54-88.

The following individuals were elected unopposed: Faith Vanderhoop and Heidi Vanderhoop, library board of trustees; Elise LeBovit, board of assessors; Jo-Ann Eccher and Carlos Montoya, planning board; Juli Vanderhoop, board of health; and Michael Hebert, town moderator.
