More than 500 runners took part in the 23rd annual Memorial Day Road Race to benefit Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard Sunday. Renee Da Silva, 30, of Vineyard Haven took first place overall, with a time of 17:06.

The race began at Ocean Park in Oak Bluffs at 11 am. The large group of runners navigated close quarters as they bunched up on narrow Lake Avenue, but soon found their stride as they loped down New York Avenue and began a five-kilometer loop around East Chop that finished at the newly opened Summercamp hotel overlooking Oak Bluffs Harbor.

Spectators gathered on the lawn of the hotel to cheer and mingle as runners, feeling the sweat of morning temperatures in the mid-70s, made their way to the finish line.

Children also participated in a one-mile fun run.

Michael Schroeder, 21, of West Tisbury finished five seconds behind Renee Da Silva, and Caleb Gartner of Falmouth a minute after that. Helena Dasilva, 13, of Auburndale took first in the female division, with a time of 20:18. Runner-up Kaelin Goulet, 30, of Vineyard Haven came in one minute later. Robert Pirozzi of Southboro finished first in the walking division, with a time of 42:50.
