Martha’s Vineyard swim team takes another loss against Durfee

On Tuesday, the Martha’s Vineyard High School girls and boys hosted Durfee. The boys and girls both lost, the girls by 95-58, and the boys by 82-53. This meet was the fourth in six days for the Vineyarders.

For the girls, co-captain Renee Goodale lowered her school record in the 200 individual medley (IM) with a time of 2:22.97. She finished second behind Durfee swimmer Jaelin Jang, who later set a pool record in winning the 500 yard freestyle (5:41.41). Renee later won the 100 yard breaststroke.

The only other winner for the girls was co-captain Lia Potter in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:05.66, her best this season. Other individuals in the top three were Potter in the 50 yard freestyle (second place, 27.68), Abigail Hammarlund in the 100-yard freestyle (second place, 1:13.63), co-captain Lucy Thompson in the 100-yard backstroke (third place, 1:29.56) and Savanna Aiello in the 100-yard breaststroke (third place, 1:43.95).

The Vineyard girls had three second-place relays: the 200-yard medley relay (Lucy Thompson, Renee Goodale, Lia Potter, and Abigail Hammarlund, 2:16.18), the 200-yard freestyle relay (Renee Goodale, Jillian Pyden, Ellie Hanjian, and Lia Potter, 2:05.08) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (Ellie Hanjian, Jillian Pyden, Lucy Thompson, and Abigail Hammarlund, 5:23.10).

For the second straight meet, the boys had only five healthy swimmers. Co-captain Harrison Dorr was a double winner with a season best time in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.08) and a personal best time of 55.04 in the 100-yard freestyle. Other boys who placed in the top three were Keith Chatinover, personal bests in both the 200-yard IM (second place, 3:02.82) and 100-yard backstroke (third place, 1:27.59), Paulo Pereira, personal bests in the 50-yard free (third place, 27.63) and 100-yard breaststroke (second place, 1:27.59) and Ryan Laslovich in the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle (second place, 1:27.49 and 7:15.66, respectively).

Like the girls, each relay took second: the 200-yard medley relay (Curtis Fisher, Paulo Pereira, Ryan Laslovich, and Coltrane LePort, 2:27.10), 200 yard freestyle relay (Curtis Fisher, Paulo Pereira, Coltrane LePort, and Harrison Dorr, 1:54.28) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (Keith Chatinover, Ryan Laslovich, Curtis Fisher, and Harrison Dorr, 4:43.55).

After Wednesday’s home meet against Bishop Stang, the Vineyarders travel to Apponoquet on Jan. 24 and return home on Saturday, Jan. 28, against Nauset.
