Winter’s Midst

0

By Margaret Charette

Another day has broken through

Just as He has planned

Mountains of ice and rivers too

In God’s snow-covered land

Blustery cold-biting wind

Snow upon the ground

Frost-covered trees, icicled roofs

Winter’s prints abound

Steamy coffee, pancakes griddled

Warm maple syrup pouring

Bundled-up, hungry guests

From buses that are touring

Mountains showing off their caps

Ponds their ice for skating

Valleys their glistening rivers and paths

A masterpiece in waiting

Mittened hands and reddened noses

Cheeks that are ice kissed

Snowsuit legs and feet of fur

Dug deep in winter’s midst

Chimneyed farms spouting smoke

Backyards; men of snow

Barns of red and hills of white

Fenceposts barely show

White-steepled churches reach for clouds

Snow angels in the making

Crackling fires warm the hands

Scents from bread that’s baking

Then slowly dusk ends another day

Goodbye to ponds and skating

Time to put the sleds away

A winter’s eve is waiting

Now candle’d windows softly call

The fireplace glowing

Darkness greets the falling snow

The horse-drawn sleigh is slowing

Another winter’s day is through

Just as He has planned

Warm memories have brought me back

To God’s snow-covered land
