The Food Truck: An up-Island gem

Food trucks have been around for several years now, especially in large cities. A couple are scattered on this little Island of ours. I recently had a chance to try a new-to-me truck: the Food Truck. Simple and to the point, as the name suggests, this truck is run by husband-and-wife team Josh and Angela Aronie, who have been selling delicious meals for working people for the past four years. The first two years they were based out of the parking lot at the Chilmark Store, and currently offer their food from the parking lot of the Home Port in Menemsha.

The truck is colorful, and a welcoming sight to those in search of good food. The menu is composed of six items, two that rotate daily: the special and the soup. Staples on the menu include the TFT burger ($14) made from locally sourced Pineland Farms beef, a blend of chuck, short rib, and a third secret cut that makes it a decadent burger served on a ciabatta roll, with what might just be the best fries on-Island, seasoned with rosemary and lemon salt. The breakfast burrito ($8) for lunch is also a stellar choice — local eggs, Cheddar cheese, and pico de gallo make it up, but you can make it your own by adding ($2 each) bacon, avocado, or sausage, and the question is, Why wouldn’t you?

The crowd gathers, and I meet a group of four friends as I wait for my burger. Davin, Rich, Kurt, and Bill have been friends for 26 years, and every winter get together to relive memories and create new ones. Coming from Florida, Maine, and Massachusetts, they were excited to try the truck and explore more of the Island that weekend. It was a nice reminder of how food helps people come together, whether around a table or a food truck.

Personally, I love menus that stick to a set selection and only change a few things, because I tend to be extremely loyal. The Falafel Wrap or Salad ($13), Josh explains, has evolved in the past years to include artichoke hearts and roasted red peppers, along with the classic tzatziki sauce. I’d suggest always starting with a cup of their soup of the day ($8), like a creamy broccoli cheese that warms you up while spring arrives.

The Food Truck will be at the Home Port parking lot until May, weekdays from 11 am until 2 pm, serving up delicious foods. Follow them on Facebook for daily menu updates: facebook.com/thefoodtruckmv/.
