Spring is here, and that means that Morning Glory Farm is back in business for the season. Traditionally the farm opens on the first Friday in May, which means this Friday, May 5.
New this year: They’ll be offering a kombucha tap from AquaViTEA Kombucha with a range of flavors including blood orange, hibiscus ginger lime, blueberry, and more. This new feature is exciting news to the fermented tea drinkers on-Island, but what we really want to know is, Will there be asparagus? We’ll just have to wait and see. According to the Morning Glory blog, asparagus “could be on the list.” They recently announced that the first asparagus shoots should break the soil by May 1, giving us all hope for the coveted vegetable.
The Island asparagus season lasts a mere six or seven weeks. Then it’s over. Morning Glory experiences the intensity of this short season. Last year they expected to pick an average of 100 to 150 pounds each day from their designated 1-acre asparagus field, with a midseason peak of between 300 to 400 pounds daily. Each day’s harvest generally sells out.
So while our fingers are crossed for asparagus, we’re also looking forward to getting our hands on their other fresh goodies. Here’s what they expect to have on hand opening day: salad greens, head lettuce, microgreens, radishes, pea tendrils, sunflower shoots, russet potatoes, cuts of pork and beef, eggs, and plants.
