Firefighters extinguished a blaze at 146 Quenames Road Wednesday at 12:23 pm, according to a press release from Chilmark Police Chief Jonathan Klaren.
According to a neighbor who was at the scene, flames were breaking through the roof of the farmhouse. The fire was reported after an intense thunderstorm on the Island. Chilmark Deputy Fire Chief Tim Carroll said one person was in the house, heard a bang, and felt a vibration. The fire may have been caused by lightning, but the cause is under investigation, he said. The cedar roof was wet, which helped confine the fire to the attic and roof, he said.
Fire crews from neighboring towns were called in to help battle the blaze. West Tisbury sent two tank trucks and an engine, West Tisbury Fire Chief Manuel Estrella III said.
Tri-Town Ambulance Chief Ben Retmier responded in an ambulance. He reported there were no injuries.
Chilmark’s assessor’s card lists the owner as Jared Stamell of New York City. The overall assessment of the 60.4 acre-property is $5.8 million.
