Safe travels for everyone going away for the February break next week. For those of us staying put, I suggest not going on Facebook or Instagram over the next couple of weeks. Seriously, all you will see is pictures of your friends and neighbors on beaches with palm trees and super-blue oceans and, if you’re like me, it will make you angry and jealous. But you may be a better person than I am, in which case, please look at all the pictures and “like” them while you’re at it.
At the library this week: Story Time is on Thursday at 3:30 pm and Saturday at 10:30 am. There will be a kids’ dinner and a movie tonight, Thursday at 5 pm. Kids craft is from 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday. Also, this Saturday the Book Group will meet at 2:30 pm, they will discuss J. D. Vance’s “Hillbilly Elegy.” Check their Facebook page for activities during the school vacation week.
The Town of Aquinnah is accepting applications for two two-bedroom homes under construction at Smalley’s Knoll off State Road. The homes will be sold through Island Housing Trust for $255,000 with affordability restrictions. Interested households earning up to $60,900 through $87,000, depending on household size may pick up applications at the Aquinnah Town Hall or the Dukes County Regional Housing Authority; download from either the town or Trust websites: aquinnah-ma.gov, or housingauthoritymarthasvineyard.org or call DCRHA at 508-693-4419 for a mailed copy. The deadline for applications is April 6, 2018.
At Pathways this Friday, “We Dance: An Evening of Performance & Dance Videos” followed by dancing for everyone with DJ Dern Campbell. There will be dance performances by Corinne de Langavant with musicians David Stanwood and Andy Herr, and MV Hip Hop Dancers. Pathways will be closed Feb. 24 to March 4 for school (and Island) vacation week. They will return with “Writer’s Read,” hosted by Niki Patton on Tuesday, March 6.
The Chilmark School PTO’s Spring Fling 2018 will be on Saturday, March 10, from 7 to 9 pm at the Chilmark Community Center. There will be silent and live auctions, a raffle, desserts, and dancing. All the money raised will go to the Chilmark School’s Outing Program. I know from experience that this is a very fun and adults-only event. Get your tickets now from any Chilmark School parent.
The 18th Annual Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival will be March 15 to 18 at the Chilmark Community Center. The opening night film will be the docudrama “Chappaquiddick,” and the film’s star, Jason Clarke, will be present. There are many other good films to see, go to tmvff.org to buy passes and tickets now.
Congratulations to Katherine Chvatal who won the Chilmark School Spelling Bee, Cian Davis was the runner up. Katherine will be representing Chilmark at the All Island spelling bee, and Cian will fill in if for any reason Katherine cannot make it.
