The sprouting of daffodils on the Vineyard is an important signal that spring is finally here. These blooms come as a welcome relief after three months of rain, high winds, and cold temperatures. The coming of spring also signals Daffodil Time, an annual fundraiser sponsored by the Martha’s Vineyard Cancer Support Group.
According to a press release, each year approximately 114 Vineyard residents are diagnosed with cancer. These patients face tremendous physical, emotional, and often financial challenges as they battle their disease. Since 1986, MVCSG has worked to ease the financial burdens of these patients by providing money for transportation and off-Island housing. They also provide assistance to help meet insurance deductibles, copays, and medications not covered by insurance. Finally, the organization conducts volunteer-run support groups for patients and their families.
You can help MVCSG provide these services by purchasing a daffodil bunch for $10. Volunteers will be selling them in the lobby of the hospital on Friday, March 16, from 8 am to 3:30 pm. You can also purchase a daffodil bunch from Stop & Shop Edgartown, Cronig’s in Vineyard Haven, and Reliable on Saturday, March 17, from 9 am to 4:30 pm.
Organizers of the event would like to thank Maurice Florists for their help in purchasing the flowers. MVCSG is a volunteer organization with little overhead. Virtually all of the funds raised go to support Islanders with cancer.
