Aquinnah: Storms and screenings

0

What a week this has been up-Island. First another storm that knocked power out in all of Aquinnah for the better part of two days. There was good sledding to be had the day after the storm, but the day of the storm, it was a little intense around here. Then on Thursday, the 18th annual Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival started. It kicked off with two screenings of the hugely popular film “Chappaquiddick.” The star and the director of the film were both present to discuss it with the audience. After the film “Patti Cake$,” a star of the film, Bridget Everett, and surprise guest Amy Schumer spoke. By all accounts, both ladies were hilarious, and a good time was had by all. It’s hard to believe that another film festival has come and gone; thank goodness there will be more films this summer.

At the library this week there will be an “adult” craft on Thursday, March 22; you can learn how to stencil on a dishtowel. Story Time will be on Thursday at 3:30 pm and Saturday at 10:30 am. Continuing the artsy theme, Jen Burkin will lead an acrylic landscape painting workshop at 2 pm on Saturday. The workshop will meet in the old town hall. The Afterschool Club will meet on Tuesday at 4 pm. The next meeting of the Book Group will be on March 31 at 2:30 pm, to discuss Jodi Picoult’s “Small Great Things.”

On Saturday, April 7, from 5 to 7 pm there will be a Spring Community Potluck sponsored by the Friends of the Aquinnah Public Library. It will be held at the Old Town Hall; please bring a dish to share and ideas about what you would like to see happen at/with the library over the next five years. There will also be some fun kids’ activities and desserts for sale. All the money raised will go to the Friends to help the library put the vision into action.

Elise LeBovit wants everyone to know that snow or no snow, the annual Duck Inn Egg Hunt is happening on Easter Sunday. They have never had to hide eggs in the snow, but if they do this year, then so be it. Please come by the Duck Inn, Friday, March 23, from 3 to 6 pm and Saturday, March 24, from 11 am to 3 pm, to paint eggs. The theme this year is birds, and the hunt will begin on Easter Sunday, April 1 (no fooling!), at 1 pm sharp.

On Saturday, March 24, at 7 pm, Pathways will host its third annual “Three Pianos” with David Stanwood and friends (including a host of awesome Vineyard musicians). This event is dedicated to Jon Harris and Mait Edey. On Sunday, March 25, from 4 to 6 pm, Pathways will show Jackie Kane’s film, “Who Elects the President?” a documentary about the media’s spin on presidential elections. Through April 23, Pathways will host a T’ai Chi class on Mondays from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. The Knitting Group also meets on Mondays at Pathways from 1 to 3 pm.

Happy birthday to Christina Vasquez, who celebrates on March 23. Happy birthday to two of the grande dames of Aquinnah, Beverly Wright and June Manning, who celebrate on March 24 and 26, respectively. Happy birthday also to Jeffie Butler, whose birthday is March 27. Hope to see you on the beach this summer.
