The MV United U-16 boys closed out a busy weekend of soccer at Veterans Park in Vineyard Haven with a solid 2-0 win over Fall River United on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.
The U-16s dressed only 13 players for the match, but they rose to the occasion in a physical contest.
Dash Christy opened the scoring 10 minutes into the first half by maneuvering along the edge of the box, and pivoting and striking the ball just inside the left post. Morgan Estrella added some insurance in the 59th minute. Following a free kick near midfield, Estrella burst through the Fall River backline, closed in on keeper Daniel Reis Jr., and slotted the ball into the left corner from five yards out.
Noah Garcia earned the clean sheet in the Vineyard goal, stopping a half-dozen shots in the second half.
Earlier in the day, the U-18 girls got the new season off to a strong start with a 2-1 win over visiting Wareham.
The U-12 girls kicked off action on Saturday, and dominated Falmouth, 8-1. The U-11 boys played next on the home pitch, and fell to Yarmouth-Dennis, 6-1. The final match of the day pitted the United U-11 girls against Nantucket. Aedan Coogan and Talia Maccaferri each tallied twice, while Reese Malowski and Ellie Mone added a goal apiece as the Vineyard side defeated their island rivals, 6-1. United controlled the field with great passing, and kept the ball in the Nantucket end for much of the match. Vineyard keepers Izzy Blake and Annabelle Metell were stellar in net.
The U-12 boys were the lone Vineyard team to play away over the weekend, and drew 1-1 at Falmouth.
